Q: Is this story autobiographical?

A: I suppose every story I write comes from a kernel of truth that pertains to my life.  There are parts of Lessons that definitely connect to my life as a child in the Valley. I do remember a cougar in a trailer camp outside of town. However my father never threw my cat off the levee. As characters come into being they demand certain actions. A writer must listen to her characters and trust them.

Q: When did you start writing?

A: I don't remember not writing. Even in grade school I was writing plays and producing them.

Q: Have you studied writing?

A: I haven't studied in the sense of getting a MA in Creative Writing, though I was on the track at one time. I often take workshops in fiction and playwriting. I love learning about the craft and I welcome feedback.

Q: How long did it take for you to write lessons?

A: While I was working on the book I also was working on a full-length play, an opera for cabaret and started another novel. I think it probably took about a year.

Q: Who is your favorite writer?

A: I have admired Joyce Carol Oates for a long time. Recently I've read Donna Tartt's, The Little Friend. I became enthralled with the book. Her writing is mysterious and sensual. Very southern. I also enjoy Anne Tyler. She writes in a clear, clean voice.
